Description of Tour
The Vendicari Nature Reserve is mainly renowned because of the unique characteristics of its flora and fauna, and its extraordinarily beautiful beaches. However the area also discloses a rich archaeological heritage. As a matter of fact, the fertility of its lands, together with the numerous natural harbors, the abundance of marine salt and fish fostered the continuous anthropization of the place from protohistory to Modern Age.
Guiding you through myths and history, Roman antiquities and industrial archaeology, seaside and architecture, our tour will finally lead you to discover the archaeological and architectural treasures of the fertile coast of Noto already inhabited during the Bronze Age. The Vendicari Tower was built in order to defend the old dock in the first half of the 15th century. In addition, its position on the top of the promontory was suitable for tuna fishing.
This aspect is currently shown not only by the near 20th-century tuna fishery owned by the Modica Munafò Family, but also by the remains of a Hellenistic-Roman factory for fish processing. Our tour will continue inside the Roman Villa of the River Tellaro, whose excavations disclosed an important complex of mosaic floors dating back to the middle of the 4th century AD.
